My 2006 R1200GS (which I love BTW) has become very smokey on start up but no smoke at all when warmed up and running or whilst accelerating or after a deceleration. I am wondering what it might be, I have had the bike for 2 years and have never noticed it before...any ideas?

Are you keeping it on the side stand? I know the newer LC bikes will do this sometimes because some oil pools in the left cylinder overnight. I imagine the same thing could happen with the older boxers too.

Try keeping it on the center stand and see if the problem goes away.

There's a thing that my 2017 Watercooled RT did...I'd read about it but it never happened to me. I hadn't started the thing for months. We had a nice pre-spring day and I took it out to the driveway. It cranked for a bit and, stupid me, I twisted the throttle a bit. Then I gave up. When I re-tried, it started up but smoked like crazy. Because I'd read about this on a forum, I shut the bike off, waited 20 seconds and restarted with no throttle input. It started normally. Haven't had a recurrence.
